Sterilization: The Vital Solution
Animal Birth Control (ABC) and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) are the only humane, scientific, and legal ways to manage street animal populations.
Sterilization is not mutilation; it is a life-saving medical procedure. It prevents the birth of thousands of homeless animals who would otherwise suffer from starvation, accidents, and disease. It also drastically reduces human-animal conflict.
Population Control
One unsterilized female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in just 6 years.
Health Benefits
Eliminates uterine/ovarian cancer. Drastically reduces mammary tumors and testicular cancer.
Safer Streets
Reduces aggression related to mating. No localized dog fights or howling at night.
The Procedures
Dogs: The ABC Program
Method: Catch - Spay/Neuter - Vaccinate - Release
- Catching: Professional dog catchers use nets.
- Surgery: Ovaries/Uterus removed (Females) or Testicles removed (Males).
- Identification: A V-shaped notch is cut into the ear. This is the universal sign of a sterilized dog.
- Release: By law, the dog MUST be released in the exact same location after 4-5 days of recovery.
Cats: TNR
Method: Trap - Neuter - Return
- Trapping: Cats are harder to catch and require humane traps with food bait.
- Ear Tipping: The tip of the left ear is surgically removed (flat cut) for visual identification from a distance.
- Impact: Stabilizes colony size. Neutered male cats stop spraying urine and fighting.
Don't Forget Rabbits!
Female rabbits have an 80% chance of developing fatal uterine cancer by age 4 if left unspayed. Sterilization is the single most important action for a pet rabbit's longevity.
Post-Operative Care
If you are caring for a community animal after surgery:
The Checklist
- E-Collar is Non-Negotiable: Prevents licking stitches.
- Keep Dry: No baths or rain for 10 days.
- Confinement: Keep indoors or in a crate for 5-7 days to restrict jumping.
- Pain Management: Ensure the vet provides 3-5 days of painkillers/antibiotics.
Emergency Signs
Rush to the vet if you see:
- Pale gums (internal bleeding)
- Protruding tissue from incision (hernia)
- Refusal to eat after 24 hours
- Excessive swelling or pus
The Law (ABC Rules 2023)

- No Relocation: Dogs MUST be returned to the same area. relocating them is illegal and punishable.
- Municipality Duty: Local bodies are responsible for funding and running ABC programs.
